Traffic challenges
The town hall in Glostrup Municipality acts as a bridge between residents and the municipality. Glostrup experienced a challenge regarding the traffic with the number of parking spots in the area, which resulted in fruitless searching for the drivers. It is a detour of half a kilometre, when the town hall parking area is fully occupied, for each driver that enters the area in vain. After reconstructing some parking spaces by the nearby train station, the municipality could ascertain an increased parking pressure in the area.
The solution
Sensade solves the problem
Glostrup municipality chose Sensade to solve their traffic challenge. Using sensor data, it is now possible for the drivers to see how many available parking spots there are in the area, before making the turn. Thus, the drivers avoid driving in vain after an available parking space.
Digital guidance
The solution for Glostrup Municipaliy, differentiates between different time restrictions and handicap parking. Data are displayed at the entrance of the parking area on both sides of the road and the driver can then save time and avoid frustrations from not being able to find an available parking spot.
The time restrictions in the parking area have been changed since the installation, to optimise the traffic flow. The visualisation of available parking was adapted from the remotely controlled LED-signs.
“It is useful to display, if it makes sense at all, to enter the area. And we have a significant shortage on the parking spaces in the area, so a more efficient guidance of the search traffic is absolutely a plus.”
The solution

The below graphs, display the average parking occupancy by the town hall in Glostrup Municipality. The data is collected over a longer period of time and the illustration displays what the average week looks like.
On the illustration, there are apparent trends. From Monday to Wednesday the parking area is practically full, from 9 o’clock and it shows a decrease in occupancy from 14 o’clock. On Thursdays, the drivers leave at 17 o’clock and Friday it is 13 o’clock. Finally, it is apparent that there is no substantial activity during the weekends by the town hall.

Friday: 9.30 – 13.30
Saturday – Sunday: Closed
By comparing the occupancy with the town hall opening hours, we can see the parking area is primarily used by citizens who needs to visit the town hall, or the Job Centre that is on the same address.
But it has not always been this way.
Glostrup Municipality has actually changed the time restrictions to stop drivers from using the area for long-time parking, before they take the train from the nearby train station. The change works and the municipality created a better flow for citizens that are visiting the town hall.
